How to Shop for Activewear: A Fit Girl’s Guide

Shopping for cute activewear is almost half the fun of working out. You want to invest in breathable fabrics that fit well and allow you maximum mobility and flexibility. Footwear with arch, instep, and ankle support is ideal for high-impact cardio workouts and activities like running and contact sports. Here’s our quick run-down on what to look for.

Running Shoes

A good pair of running shoes can be the difference between injury and better performance. Pay attention to the architecture of the shoe and how it fits around your foot. Run your fingers over the top of the shoe and make sure that there’s no chafing. The curve on the back of the shoe shouldn’t be too high. Don’t buy a size that is too small. If you can’t wiggle your toes in it, it’s time to move a size up.

Yoga Pants

Yoga pants or workout bottoms should pass the squat test. The fabric should be stretchable enough to allow for the mobility of a deep squat but also fitted so well that the fabric doesn’t move. A good pair of yoga pants are lightweight, wear well with prolonged use, and have a moisture-wicking material. Mesh panels look stylish and flatter all body shapes but they also provide a layer of cooling. If you like high waistbands make sure the fabric doesn’t feel constricting. Avoid transparent or thin fabrics as these are more prone to sweat patches.

Sports Bras

Smaller cup sizes can get away with compression-style sports bras but larger cup sizes might find individual cups more comfortable. Racerback styles provide extra support but a wide strap will help distribute weight better and improve your performance. Pay attention to band size too – experts say 70 percent of a bra’s support comes from the band.

Workout Tops and Jackets

Sleeveless tanks are great for yoga or barre which require a greater range of motion from your arms. Layering a moisture-wicking sports jacket over your shirt when you’re running in cold weather will keep your muscles warm and prevent injury. Remember to buy jackets and shirts with reflective strips if you tend to go for a run when it gets dark.
