The Pros And Cons Of Sedans And Hatchbacks

Sedans and hatchbacks are two basic car body types. A sedan has four doors, an engine bay, and a trunk. A hatchback doesn’t have a separate trunk. Instead, it comes with a high back end and a vertically opening rear door that provides access to a large cargo area. Let’s explore the pros and cons of each body type.

Sedan Or Hatchback?

The final decision comes down to your need and preference. But there are a few important things that you need to remember regarding each type of vehicle.

Cargo And Passenger Space

Because of their shape, most hatchbacks tend to have much more interior space than sedans. This means that they have more space for luggage than sedans too. The high rear end also means that hatchbacks also have much more headroom for rear passengers.

Fuel Efficiency

This varies from model to model. But overall, sedans tend to be lighter and much more aerodynamic than hatchbacks. This translates into better mileage for sedans, which saves drivers a lot of money on their daily commute.

Visibility

Hatchback design tends to be more upright than that of sedans. They also have a large rear window that offers better visibility for drivers. But this rear window often has a wiper, and that’s another moving part that may break. So, hatchbacks provide a better view of the road, but it may come at the cost of extra maintenance.

Security

Sedans have a lockable trunk that no one can look into from the outside. Valuables can be safely locked away in the trunk out of sight. A hatchback needs a parcel tray behind the rear seat to obstruct the view into the cargo area. Otherwise, the only thing that separates an outsider from the cargo space of a hatchback is the rear window that can easily be broken.

Price And Options

Since sedans are more popular, more options exist for all types of sedans. Hatchbacks are usually available only in more expensive trims that may put them out of reach for a budget shopper. Availability may also be limited. But, if you’re looking to save money, you could always check the used car market for a large number of options.
